In short
What happens between you stays between you. Your answers, sessions and notes are only for your pair. Your partner sees your answer to a ping only once you both say "Yes".
We never sell your data. We only share research data anonymized and aggregated, and only if you explicitly opt in (it's off by default).
You can view, correct or fully erase your data at any time.
Who is responsible
Aforia is offered from the Netherlands. For questions or requests about your data, reach us via the contact page or privacy@aforia.nl.
What data we process
Here's exactly what Aforia stores. We deliberately keep it to what the app needs.
Account & profile
- Your email address and password, the password is stored encrypted (hashed); we never see it.
- Optionally: your display name, your gender and a profile photo.
- Whether you confirmed you're 18+, when you gave consent, and your choices for notifications and sharing research data.
Your couple
- Who you're paired with and since when, plus your shared preferences: frequency, parts of the day, quiet hours, custom ping texts and theme.
- The email address you enter to invite your partner.
How you use the app
- Your answers to pings ("Yes"/"No"), when a ping was sent and how quickly you answered.
- Logged sessions: the number of orgasms per person, an optional short note, and any chosen positions.
- In Discover: your private swipes (yes/no/favorite) on positions and kink prompts, and custom positions you add. Your swipes are yours alone, your partner only sees where you both agree.
- Streaks & milestones, which Pillow-talk cards you read, check-ins ("let's talk") and your in-app notifications.
Device & technical
- If you turn on notifications: a push token and your platform (iOS/Android), so we can send you a ping or notification.
Optional, only with your consent
- Proximity: a blurred location cell of about 150 metres (a "geohash"), never an exact address. We keep only the most recent one, with no history. This lets the app tell whether you're together. Off by default; adjustable under Privacy & data.
Why, and on what legal basis
We use this data solely to run the app: pairing you, sending pings at your chosen moments, tracking sessions and showing the orgasm gap, streaks and insights. Processing is based on the performance of the agreement (the service you use) and, for everything optional, on your explicit consent.
Who can see what
- You and your partner: your shared pair data, with the rule that an answer to a ping only becomes mutually visible on a match (Yes + Yes).
- Aforia: we run the servers, but build the app so access to personal data stays minimal, every row is isolated per user and per couple (row-level security).
- No one else, unless you choose to share anonymous research data (see below).
Research, only if you want to
Aforia is built on science and wants to help research into the orgasm gap move forward. So you can, entirely voluntarily, choose to share anonymous insights. This is off by default.
What we share then
Only anonymized, aggregated insights, patterns across many couples. Never anything about one person or one couple.
What we never share
Your name, email, location, notes or anything traceable to you. No free text, no individual events, only aggregated figures from which no one can find you.
With whom
Only verified academic researchers, under a formal agreement and with ethics approval from their university. Never advertisers or data brokers. We don't sell this data, not now, not ever.
Always reversible
You can switch this choice off again with one tap, retroactively too. If this agreement ever changes, we'll ask you again.
Processors we use
Aforia runs on our own server within the EU (Germany); that's where your data and your profile photo live. In addition, we use a few service providers that process something on our behalf:
- Resend, for sending emails (confirmation, recovery and invitation mails), processed within the EU.
- Expo, for delivering push notifications to your phone; for this, your push token and the notification text go via Expo's push service.
With providers that process personal data on our behalf, we put data-processing agreements in place.
International transfers
Your data stays within the EU in principle. Only push notifications go via Expo, which processes (partly) outside the EU; we limit this to the push token and the notification text, and rely on that service's appropriate safeguards.
Cookies & analytics
This website uses no tracking cookies and no analytics. The contact form only sends what you enter yourself. In the app we store only what's technically necessary on your device (such as your login session).
How long we keep it
We keep your data for as long as you have an account. If you delete your account, we erase your personal data. Research data that's already shared is anonymized and no longer traceable to you, so it can't be individually retrieved.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict and port your data, and the right to withdraw consent you've given. You can handle much of this directly in the app under Privacy & data; for the rest, email us. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
Security
Connections are encrypted via HTTPS and your password is stored hashed. Access to data is strictly isolated: every user and every couple can only reach their own data (row-level security), on a secured server within the EU. Your profile photo is in protected storage and not public, only you and your partner can view it, via temporary signed links. Still, no system is completely watertight; if you notice anything suspicious, let us know at privacy@aforia.nl.
Age
Aforia is intended exclusively for adults (18+).
Changes
If this policy changes, we update the date at the top and, for significant changes, let you know in the app.
